Pershing High School Scholars Take a Step Toward Their Future Through Career Exploration

At Pershing High School, preparing students for life beyond graduation is more than a goal—it’s a mission. Through impactful programs like Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates (JMG), students are encouraged not only to dream big, but to actively pursue pathways that lead to success.

Recently, Pershing scholars participated in an immersive experience designed to expose them to college life, career pathways, and post-secondary opportunities. This experience, supported through the JMG program and in partnership with Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation, connected classroom learning with real-world possibilities.

Among the students in attendance was Leadreahana Drew, a proud senior from the Class of 2026, who represents the determination and potential cultivated within the JMG program. As an active participant, Leadreahana has been developing essential leadership skills, strengthening her career readiness, and preparing for life after high school.

During the experience, students were able to explore a college environment, gaining firsthand exposure to academic spaces, student life, and the expectations of higher education. For many, this opportunity helped transform the idea of college from something distant into something achievable and within reach.

Students also engaged in meaningful discussions about academic programs, financial aid, and various career pathways. These conversations provided clarity, built confidence, and allowed students to begin envisioning themselves in professional and collegiate spaces.

What made this experience especially impactful was its alignment with the mission of Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates—to ensure students are not only graduating, but are also fully prepared for continued education and sustainable careers. Through mentorship, exposure, and hands-on opportunities, JMG continues to serve as a powerful bridge between high school and the future.

Leadreahana Drew and her peers walked away from this experience feeling inspired, motivated, and empowered. For them, this was more than just a field trip—it was a meaningful step toward defining their goals and embracing their futures.
